Tours and guides
For trips beyond Addis, a licensed tour operator handles the vehicle, driver, permits and local guides, and keeps track of security on the road. These are long-running operators that are members of the Ethiopian Tour Operators Association and are well rated by travellers. Nobody pays to be listed.

Before you book or pay
- Ask the operator for its Ministry of Tourism licence (competence certificate), and ask your guide to show their guide ID or licence. A real operator or guide won't mind.
- Check the operator is in the ETOA member directory.
- Only book operators you can find on their own website and with good, recent reviews on Tripadvisor or Google Maps. Read the newest reviews, not just the score.
- Get the itinerary, what's included (vehicle, fuel, park fees, scouts, meals) and the price in writing before you pay.
- At churches, parks and historic sites, hire the official guides who work at the entrance rather than someone who approaches you in the street.
Questions people ask
Should I book a tour operator for trips outside Addis Ababa?
Yes, for anything beyond Addis, book through a licensed tour operator. They handle vehicles, drivers, permits and local guides, and they track security conditions daily.
How do I choose a tour operator in Ethiopia?
Ask for its trade licence from the Ministry of Tourism and whether it's a member of the Ethiopian Tour Operators Association (ETOA). Get a written quote showing what's included, ask how they monitor security, and check recent independent reviews.
How should I pay a deposit to a tour operator in Ethiopia?
Pay by bank transfer or card to the company, not to an individual's personal account.
What is ETOA in Ethiopia?
ETOA is the Ethiopian Tour Operators Association. Many established operators belong to it, so asking whether an operator is a member is a useful check.
What's the difference between a tour operator and a travel agent in Ethiopia?
A tour operator runs full trips, with vehicle, driver, hotels, guides, park fees and flights, and is the usual choice for multi-day trips outside Addis. A travel agent books flights, hotels, visas and transfers.
Do I need a scout to trek in Ethiopia's national parks?
In some parks, yes: armed or unarmed scouts are required for trekking. Check whether scouts are included in your operator's written quote.
